Should you buy Avianca LifeMiles with the 145% bonus from India?

If you have been watching Hilton, Aeroplan, and IHG buy promos, this is the sharper airline buy left on the table right now. Avianca LifeMiles is selling miles with up to a 145% bonus through 25 September 2026 (11:59 p.m. Central). At the top tier that works out to about 1.35 US cents per mile — and LifeMiles is still one of the cleaner Star Alliance programmes for partner awards that usually skip heavy fuel surcharges.
From India the catch is simple: you pay in USD on Points.com. I only run that bill on a card with 0% forex markup, and I only buy after I have already found the award.
The bonus tiers
| Miles you buy (before bonus) | Bonus | Rough effective rate |
|---|---|---|
| 1,000 – 20,000 | 125% | ~1.53¢ / mile |
| 21,000 – 50,000 | 135% | ~1.50¢ / mile |
| 51,000 – 200,000 | 145% | ~1.35¢ / mile |
Miles sell in 1,000-mile steps. Cap per transaction is 200,000 miles before bonus — so $6,600 lands about 490,000 miles at 145%. Calendar-year purchase cap is often quoted at 500,000 miles before bonuses; check the live T&Cs on your account.
India math: USD charge + 0% forex
LifeMiles purchases go through Points.com. They do not post as airline tickets on your card, so you will not get “flights” category bonuses. What you do get is a foreign-currency bill.
At ~₹84 per dollar, 1.35¢ is roughly ₹1.13 per LifeMile before any junk fees. A 3.5% forex markup on a ₹1.5–2 lakh buy is real money — so I would not put this on a normal 3.5% card. I would use something like Scapia, IDFC FIRST’s 0% forex cards, or another zero-markup card that still works for USD online. HSBC’s zero-forex offer also helps if you are still inside that window.
Why LifeMiles still matters from India
- Star Alliance metal — United, Lufthansa Group, Turkish, Swiss, and partners.
- Air India partner awards are often searchable in LifeMiles when space exists — useful when Maharaja Club pricing or taxes look worse.
- Partner awards frequently avoid the classic fuel-surcharge pain you see on some European programmes.
- Good top-up currency when you are a few thousand short of a saver you already found.
When I would buy — and when I would not
I buy only for a checked redemption. Search LifeMiles (and a backup like Aeroplan) first. Screenshot the award, taxes, and carrier. Then buy the smallest chunk that clears the booking — usually the 51k+ tier if you need a big top-up and the 1.35¢ rate, or a smaller tier if you only need a bridge.
I would skip this if:
- You are buying miles “for the balance” with no itinerary.
- Cash fares on the same route are already cheap after you add LifeMiles taxes.
- Your only card for USD still charges ~3.5% forex and the markup kills the bonus.
- You can transfer bank points into LifeMiles (or a better Star programme) for less than 1.35¢ — rare from India, but check before you wire cash.
Quick checklist
- Log into LifeMiles and confirm your account shows the 125% / 135% / 145% tiers.
- Find the award and note taxes in INR or USD.
- Pick a 0% forex card and enable international online usage.
- Buy only what you need; wait for miles to post before you ticket if the site says there is a delay.
- Book the award the same day if space is thin.
