Amex Platinum Travel changes from 11 October 2026: new app, split MR, EMI

American Express has mailed Platinum Travel Card Members in India about the mid-October technology upgrade — the same platform work behind the pause on new card applications. Existing holders keep the card. What changes is how you service it, how Membership Rewards sit if you hold more than one Basic Card, and a handful of EMI, fee, and add-on rules. Benefit and T&C changes are dated 11 October 2026. The new Online Account on the Amex Mobile App and website lands around mid-October.
What is changing, and when
| Change | Date | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| New Supplementary Card applications paused | 22 September 2026 | Apply before this date and complete by 30 September 2026. |
| MITC, Card Member Agreement, Membership Rewards T&Cs | 11 October 2026 | Servicing, MR pooling, EMI, refunds, late fees, and interest illustrations update. |
| New Online Account (app + website) | Mid-October 2026 | Memberships tab, in-app MR redemption including airline/hotel transfers, freeze/replace, disputes, EMI. |
This letter is for the American Express Platinum Travel Credit Card. Other India products may get their own notices as the same issuing platform comes up. Treat the dates below as Platinum Travel’s, not a blanket Amex India calendar until you see your letter.
New Online Account
Amex is replacing the current servicing stack with one Online Account across the mobile app and website. The pitch is a Memberships tab for benefits and offers (lounges, online travel booking, current offers), plus more self-serve journeys that used to mean a call or a form.
- Redeem Membership Rewards in the Amex Mobile App, including transfers to partner airlines and hotels — in addition to the website redemption flow.
- Update email, phone, and address in the account.
- Turn domestic, overseas, and online transactions on or off in real time.
- Freeze or unfreeze the Card, or request a replacement.
- Raise a dispute or request a credit-balance refund through new app and website journeys.
Statement-credit redemptions also get simpler: you can apply points to the outstanding Card balance in one go, without picking individual transactions. Earn rate and the list of redemption options are described as unchanged — the split-pool rule below is the operational change that matters if you hold two Basic Cards.
This sits next to the earlier cut to Emergency Card Replacement and Check Your Spending Power. After 8 October, replacement is the standard 7–10 business day path; freeze/unfreeze in the new account does not restore an expedited plastic courier.
Digital EMI: 10 transactions, no SMS, no balance conversion
From the new Online Account you can convert up to 10 eligible individual transactions into EMI from the transaction view — up from 6 today. Conversion is described as automated and immediate, with no separate form.
- EMI requests via SMS will not be available.
- Conversion of the outstanding statement balance into EMI will not be available.
- Per-transaction EMI stays, with a higher cap (10 vs 6).
If you currently convert a leftover balance to EMI by SMS or a balance-conversion journey, do that before 11 October 2026. After cutover you only get per-transaction EMI in the app or website, on eligible spends, up to 10 at a time.
Membership Rewards: still the same rate, no longer one pool
Amex says the Platinum Travel earn rate and redemption options do not change. Two mechanics do.
Points split across Basic Cards
If you hold two or more Basic American Express Cards, Membership Rewards will be maintained separately on each Card from 11 October 2026. You redeem only the points sitting on that Card. Points can no longer be transferred between Cards. Supplementary Card spend still consolidates onto the associated Basic Card.
No earn or redeem while a payment is overdue into the next statement
If the due amount is still unpaid when your next statement is generated, you stop earning Membership Rewards on transactions from that new statement date, and you cannot redeem during that period. Earn and redeem resume after the due balance is paid. Amex’s example: statement date 1 October 2026, payment still due on 1 November 2026 — no earn or redeem from 1 November until you clear it.
Annual spend milestone: posted date, credited at month-end
Annual spend milestone benefits continue. Eligible spend is calculated on the posting date, not the swipe date. Associated Membership Rewards points and vouchers are awarded at the end of the calendar month in which the milestone is achieved. A purchase on 31 October 2026 that posts on 1 November 2026 counts toward November for milestone tracking.
That is a tracking and payout-timing change, not a rewrite of the milestone table in this letter. Watch posting lags around month-end if you are close to a milestone.
Supplementary Cards and Account Cards
- New Supplementary Card applications: paused from 22 September 2026; complete any in-flight application by 30 September 2026.
- Existing Supplementary Cards: not withdrawn by this letter.
- Account Cards issued in your name: existing plastic keeps working for splitting and tracking spends.
- New Account Cards: no longer available after the change.
Payments, refunds, and late fees
Eligible refunds and reversals received by the payment due date will be adjusted toward Minimum Amount Due and Total Amount Due — including refunds that arrive after the statement is generated. That is the cardholder-friendly line in the letter: a merchant credit that posts before due date can shrink what you must pay, even if it missed the statement.
Late Payment Fee moves off Minimum Amount Due and onto Total Amount Due, in slabs from ₹500 to ₹1,250. The letter does not print the slab breakpoints. Interest calculation methodology and the illustrations in the Most Important Terms and Conditions will also be updated. Read the 11 October MITC rather than assuming today’s late-fee maths still apply.
What you should do before cutover
- If you need a Supplementary Card, apply before 22 September 2026 and finish KYC/application by 30 September 2026.
- If you convert outstanding balances to EMI by SMS, do it before 11 October 2026.
- If you hold two Basic Amex Cards, note each MR balance and redeem or transfer from the Card that holds the points — you will not be able to move points across Cards after 11 October.
- Pay on time so you are not sitting overdue on a statement date; that now freezes earn and redeem until you clear the due amount.
- For milestone hunts, track posted transactions, not swipe dates, especially on the last days of the month.
