HSBC Live+ review: the upgraded card and its new benefits

HSBC Live+ used to be an easy card to ignore: a ₹999 Visa Infinite with a cashback story that never quite beat SBI Cashback or Axis Ace on the spends that matter. That maths has changed. HSBC has widened the 10% bucket, added a real (if small) lounge quota, and stacked enough lifestyle perks that the card is finally worth a hard look if your month already looks like dining, grocery, shopping, and bills.
Here is what Live+ pays now, who it actually fits, and how to use it without wasting the monthly cap.

The cashback engine — this is why the card got interesting
Live+ is a two-rate cashback card. Hit dining, food delivery, grocery, shopping, or utilities and you earn 10% until the month’s ₹1,200 cap fills. Most other eligible spends earn 1.5% with no cap. Fuel earns nothing. That split is the whole product.
₹1,200 at 10% is ₹12,000 of bonus-category spend in a calendar month. Spend ₹12,000 on dining, Blinkit, BigBasket, a Myntra order, and the electricity bill, and you have maxed the accelerated bucket. Spend ₹40,000 in those categories and you still take home ₹1,200 — the extra ₹28,000 does not keep printing 10%.
Let’s understand with a simple example of ₹65,000 spent per month
10% on dining, delivery, grocery, shopping, and utilities comes to ₹4,150. The monthly cap of ₹1,200 still applies, so you get ₹1,200 from these categories — not the full ₹4,150. 1.5% on hotel, entertainment, and medicine adds ₹345. Fuel adds nothing. Total cashback for the month: ₹1,545.
| Category | Spend | Rate | Cashback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dining | ₹11,500 | 10% | ₹1,150 |
| Food delivery | ₹5,000 | 10% | ₹500 |
| Groceries | ₹9,000 | 10% | ₹900 |
| Shopping | ₹15,000 | 10% | ₹1,500 |
| Utilities | ₹1,000 | 10% | ₹100 |
| Hotel | ₹15,000 | 1.5% | ₹225 |
| Entertainment | ₹5,000 | 1.5% | ₹75 |
| Medicine | ₹3,000 | 1.5% | ₹45 |
| Fuel | ₹500 | 0% | ₹0 |
| Total | ₹65,000 | 10% capped at ₹1,200 + 1.5% | ₹1,545 |
If you naturally clear ~₹12,000 a month in the 10% categories, Live+ pays ₹14,400 a year from the accelerated bucket alone. That is before 1.5% on the rest of the card, before welcome cashback, and before the annual fee is waived at ₹2 lakh spend. For a salaried urban household that already eats out, orders in, and groceries on card, that is a clean rupee return — no portal, no points valuation arguments.
Fees, waiver, and the real annual cost
Joining fee is ₹999. Annual fee is ₹999, waived if you spend more than ₹2 lakh in the year. GST is extra. This is a mid-fee card, not a premium one.
The waiver threshold is the quiet design. ₹2 lakh a year is about ₹16,700 a month. If you are already putting dining, grocery, shopping, and utilities on this card to chase the ₹1,200 cap, you are most of the way there. The remaining spend can sit on 1.5% — hotels, entertainment, medicine, and other eligible retail — rather than on a second card you forget to use.
Do not manufacture ₹2 lakh of junk spend to save a ₹999 fee. If your natural card spend is ₹80,000 a year, Live+ is a paid card; judge it on the 10% months you will actually hit, not on a waiver you will miss.
Welcome offers (apply in the current window)
New cards pick up a useful welcome if you apply online and actually use the card in the first month.
- ₹250 Amazon eGift Voucher when you apply online, finish Video KYC, and the card is issued (offer runs through 31 October 2026).
- ₹750 voucher for Amazon Pay, Zomato, or Swiggy when you activate with a ₹300+ transaction.
- ₹1,000 cashback when you log in to the HSBC India app and spend ₹25,000 within the first 30 days.
- ₹1,000 cashback if you share income via Account Aggregator and spend ₹1,000 or more within 30 days.
- 10% extra cashback on Myntra until 31 October 2026, plus a Starbucks tasting / ₹200 off next purchase.
A realistic first-month picture if you apply online: ₹250 Amazon on VKYC, ₹750 merchant voucher on a ₹300+ swipe, and ₹1,000 statement credit if you can put ₹25,000 on the card in 30 days while logging into the app. That is real money on a ₹999 joining fee. It is also easy to miss if you activate, throw the card in a drawer, and never hit ₹25,000.
Travel: lounges, 1.99% forex, eSIM
Live+ is not a travel card. It is a cashback card that now throws in a light lounge kit — enough to matter if you fly a few times a year, not enough to replace Atlas, TravelOne, or a dedicated lounge membership.
- 2 complimentary domestic airport lounge visits per year.
- 1 complimentary international lounge visit per year, from 1 September 2026.
- 1.99% forex markup on international transactions — well below the 3.5% many Indian cards still charge, and usable if this is your backup overseas card.
- Complimentary 1GB global eSIM plus 20% off top-ups.
- Complimentary airport Meet & Assist if you have spent over USD 1,000 abroad in the past 12 months.
Two domestic visits a year is roughly one round-trip if you use a lounge each way. It will not cover a weekly flyer. The international visit is the new piece: from this month, a once-a-year overseas trip gets a lounge without buying Priority Pass.
Dining, hotels, and the lifestyle stack
This is where Live+ stopped looking like a plain cashback SKU and started looking like a Visa Infinite with a dining programme attached.
Live+ Reserve (from 1 August 2026)
Live+ Reserve, powered by DineWithTimesPrime, opens a curated list of Indian restaurants — Indian Accent, Tresind, Comorin, Olive and more — with chef-curated menus and complimentary beverages or desserts, plus Times Prime extras (Toni & Guy, Sony LIV, TUMI). Claim it on the Live+ Reserve portal. It is worth something if you would book those tables anyway.
ITC, Avis, cinema, fuel
- ITC Hotels: complimentary 3rd night after 2 consecutive paid nights, or stay 2 nights and get 50% off the 2nd night.
- Avis: up to 35% off standard rates and complimentary Avis President’s Club membership.
- District (Zomato): buy-one-get-one cinema tickets.
- BookMyShow: buy-one-get-one cinema tickets, plus 10% off live events.
- District Play: up to 50% off (up to ₹300) on the first 3 pickleball, padel, football, or tennis bookings.
- Sephora: 10% off all online purchases.
- Fuel: ₹250 cashback on contactless fuel when you spend ₹10,000 in a quarter. That is a quarterly bonus, not 10% on petrol. Everyday fuel still earns 0%.
Visa Infinite extras
Because Live+ is Visa Infinite, these network offers sit on top of the HSBC cashback:
- Visa Exclusive Dining Programme.
- 20% off flexible rates at participating IHG hotels (InterContinental, Six Senses, Holiday Inn, and others).
- Up to 7% off with Agoda on hotels, flights, and activities.
- 8% at Ajio Luxe — instant discount up to ₹4,500 on spends of ₹10,000 or more.
- 20% off at Tattva Spa on listed full-body massages.
- Visa Concierge, 24/7.
Network offers rotate and get capped. Use them when they are live — do not plan a trip around an IHG or Ajio Luxe discount staying forever.
Eligibility — Live+ is not pan-India
Live+ is not available everywhere. You need to be an Indian resident in one of the cities below.
- Age: 18–65 salaried, 25–65 self-employed.
- Income: minimum ₹6,00,000 a year salaried, or ₹12,00,000 a year self-employed.
- Must be an Indian resident.
- Must live in one of: Chennai, Gurgaon, Delhi NCR, Pune, Noida, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kochi, Coimbatore, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Amritsar, Baroda, Indore, Lucknow, Nagpur, Surat, or Trivandrum.
Outside that city list, you cannot apply. Salaried applicants need a latest salary slip; others need ID, address proof, and PAN.
Who should get Live+ now
The upgraded card is for people whose monthly spend already looks like the 10% list, who want rupees back on the statement, and who will not cry about a two-visit domestic lounge cap.
- You spend around ₹10,000–₹15,000 a month on dining, delivery, grocery, shopping, and utilities combined — enough to approach the ₹1,200 cap most months without inventing spend.
- You prefer cashback to points, and you do not want to book through SmartBuy or a transfer partner to get value.
- ₹2 lakh annual spend is realistic, so the ₹999 fee should waive.
- You fly domestically a couple of times a year and will use the 2+1 lounge quota rather than paying for a lounge membership.
- You like the idea of Live+ Reserve / ITC / BOGO movies as extras, not as the reason to apply.
Who should skip it
- Heavy online shoppers who will blow past ₹12,000 of bonus categories and then sit on 1.5%. SBI Cashback still wins on uncapped-style 5% online for that profile.
- Points collectors and hotel-programme people. HSBC TravelOne (and the TravelOne vs Live+ compare) is the transfer-partner card in this issuer family.
- Lounge-maximisers and weekly flyers. Two domestic visits a year is a perk, not a lounge strategy.
- Fuel-first spenders. Everyday fuel earns 0%. The ₹250 quarterly bonus only unlocks after ₹10,000 of contactless fuel spend.
- Anyone outside the listed cities, or anyone who will not pay the statement in full. Cashback on a revolving balance is a rounding error against interest.
How we would use it in a wallet
If you hold Live+ after this upgrade, the clean routing is: dining, delivery, grocery, shopping, and utilities on Live+ until the month’s ₹1,200 cap is done; then move those categories to whatever else you hold (Ace for bills, SBI Cashback for online, a premium points card for travel). Hotels and most other retail can stay on Live+ at 1.5% if you have no better card. International spends are fine at 1.99% markup when you do not have a specialist forex card with you.
Track the cap. Once ₹1,200 has posted (or your 10%-category spend has crossed ~₹12,000), every extra Swiggy order on this card is leaving 10% on the table versus the first half of the month. That is the only way a capped accelerated card fails in practice: people keep swiping it after the bonus is exhausted.
Frequently asked questions
Is HSBC Live+ a good credit card after the upgrade?
Yes, if you will actually fill most of the ₹1,200 monthly 10% cap on dining, delivery, grocery, shopping, and utilities, and you can waive the ₹999 annual fee at ₹2 lakh spend. It is a weak pick if your spend is uncapped online retail or travel points.
What is the HSBC Live+ cashback rate?
10% on dining, food delivery, grocery, shopping, and utility spends, capped at ₹1,200 per month, plus 1.5% unlimited cashback on most other eligible spends. Cashback credits within 45 days of the statement date.
Does HSBC Live+ have airport lounge access?
Yes. 2 complimentary domestic lounge visits per year, and from 1 September 2026 1 complimentary international lounge visit per year.
